Urals Oil Becomes More Expensive Than ESPO in April: Causes and Consequences

The export price of Russian Urals crude oil in Russian ports in April 2026 significantly exceeded the cost of ESPO crude oil, according to data from Argus, the Price Index Center (PIC), and the consulting company NEFT Research. As noted by the PIC, during the week of April 13 to April 19, Urals was priced at $95.4/barrel on a FOB Primorsk basis (Leningrad region) and $94.4/barrel on a FOB Novorossiysk basis, whereas ESPO was priced at $89.6/barrel on a FOB Kozmino basis (Primorsky Krai). This means that Urals was more expensive by $4.8–5.8/barrel.

According to NEFT Research, the average price of Urals from April 13 to April 17 was $91.4/barrel in Novorossiysk and $93.2/barrel in Primorsk, while ESPO crude was priced at $91.1/barrel. The previous week, Urals had been more expensive by $12–14/barrel, and according to the PIC, by $15–16/barrel.
